Department of Economics

Overview

The Economics Department was constituted more than 25 years back with a few faculty members but subsequently the department has grown in terms of faculty strength academics and divisions. The Economics Departmental Faculty presently caters to BA Programme (General & Honors), B.Com programme and post graduate programme of MA Economics. Presently the department has four regular faculty, one contract and two lecture basis faculty. This lends strength to the undergraduate and post graduate teaching of economics. The department of Economics caters to more than 400 students every year. Besides offering Core papers to students of BA (Honors & General) economics programme & B.Com programme the department offers Generic Elective Papers, SEC( Skill Enhancement Courses) for BA students.

With a diverse student population, specially from rural areas the department of Economics enriches teaching learning through ICT, assignments, tests, quizzes, projects, study trips, competition, seminars, workshops, community building exercise, personality development programmes etc. encouraging team work and leadership qualities.

Teaching Learning

For the B.A and B.Com programme The Department of Economics engages courses for FYBA (Core and Generic Courses), SYBA (Core, Generic and Skill Enhancement Courses). TYBA (Economics HONORS and GENERAL Courses), FYBCom (Core courses), TYBCom (Core Courses). In the current year 2021-22 the faculty members are guiding 04 third year projects. Various ICT tools are engaged in the teaching- Learning Process. Besides the Undergraduate section the faculties from the Department of Economics are also involved in teaching-learning process of Post Graduate Section of Economics of the College. The faculty teaches both core and optional courses for the Post Graduate students of Economics. Besides the course outcomes the students are also enriched in Personality Development and other Knowledge.

Capacity Building

  • The teachers from the Department of Economics develop and train students in various competencies, skills, talents. Students are trained to answer National Eligibility Tests/ State Eligibility tests, etc. Various Quizzes, Power point Presentations, workshops, short term certificate courses, talks, business initiative programmes like “ORGANICBIZ” and competitions are initiated. Students are also deputed for various competitions.
  • Students of Economics are given talks on overall holistic Personality Development.
  • Individual capacity building is also done through various trainings and Mentorships done by the teachers.
  • Organizational capacity building is done by the Department by use of ICT.
  • Systematic Capacity building is done through strengthening of Public awareness through Programmes of floating of Schemes, dissemination of knowledge through YouTubes, Flyers, Cleanliness drives, campus interviews, etc.
  • Practical Knowledge is given to the students through study trips.
  • Students are encouraged to attend various seminars, conferences and workshops.

Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav

Under the AZADI KA AMRUT MAHOTSAV the Department of Economics carried out Social work / Community work as under.

  1. As per the directives from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and as a part of the celebration of “Aazadi ka Amrut Mohotsav” the teachers from the Department of Economics took part in a “Cleanliness Drive” organized by the College for the teachers on 23rd October 2021 from 3.00 pm to 5.00pm (02 Hours)  in Sanquelim from Shivaji statue to Datta-Mandir to Municipality Market to Kadamba Bus Stand. Outcome: Cleaner and garbage free Sanquelim. Number of Beneficiaries: All citizens of Sanquelim – Goa

  2. “Miramar Beach Cleanlines Drive” was carried out on 21st November 2021. (10 Hours). As the Head of Department of Economics over-all co-ordinated this Programme with Economics departmental Colleagues of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sanquelim- Goa and collected a lot of plastics from the beach. Outcome: Cleaner beach, water and air. Number of Beneficiaries: All the citizens of Goa, tourists of India and the World visiting Miramar Beach.

  3. “Cleanliness Drive in Old Goa” was carried out on 5th December 2021. (10 Hours). As Head of Department of Economics over-all co-ordinated this Programme with Economics departmental Colleagues of the college. Outcome: Cleaner World Heritage Site and its surroundings. Number Of Beneficiaries: All the citizens of Goa, Tourists of India and the World, visiting the World Heritage sites in Old Goa.

  4.  Carried out a  programme for the inmates of Old Age Home, Old Goa (Franciscan Hospitaller sisters, Convent of St. John of God, Home for the senior citizens, Old Goa.) held on 24th December 2021 (05 Hours). As Head of Department of Economics overall co-ordinated this Programme with Economics departmental Colleagues of the college. Outcome: Happier older people entertained (Carol Singing done) and decorated the premises of Old Age Home on the eve of Christmas and jointly donated 26 blankets and other basic necessities. Number of Beneficiaries: All the 26 Senior Citizens of the Old Age Home, Old Goa

  5. Carried out a programme for the inmates of Old Age Home (Shanti Kuttir), Sarvan, Bicholim held on 27th December 2021 (10 Hours). Outcome: Celebrated the joy of senior citizens by cutting of a cake by the Owner, Ms. Shamma Desai and other caretakers. All the teachers from the Department of Economics decorated the premises of Shanti Kuttir and entertained the senior citizens.  The teachers jointly donated 19 blankets and other basic necessities to the senior citizens of Shanti Kuttir. As Head of Department of Economics overall co-ordinated this Programme with Economics departmental Colleagues of the college. Number of Beneficiaries: 19 Senior Citizens of Shanti Kuttir, Sarvan – Bicholim

  6. Conducted a free workshop on, “Practical Aspects of Agriculture” held on 23/1/22 for 19 beneficiaries on a virtual platform by Dr.Agnela A. D. Dias HOD, Economics (3 hours).
  7. Feeding of street dogs in Merces on 25/2/22 as part of community work by Dr.Agnela A. D. Dias, HOD, Economics (3 hours).A  free Workshop on, “RTI and its Practicality” was organized by Dr. Agnela A. D. Dias (HOD, Economics) for the Honors students of Economics on 20/3/2022 delivered by Resource Person Advocate Siddhi Mhalsekar as a part of Social work (10 hours). Outcome: Knowledgeable students. Number of Beneficiaries: Honours students of Economics (14 students).
